Most people think the Pledge of Allegiance is just 31 words we say out of habit, a rote ritual left over from a different era, until they realize it is actually the anchor holding our civic house together in 2026.
I’ll be honest with you: I get asked the "why" question a lot. Why do I spend my mornings writing to you? Why do we at Pledge Allegiance pour our resources into classroom programs, veteran initiatives, and community dialogues? In a world that feels increasingly loud and divided, some might argue that a century-old pledge is a relic.
But I’m here to tell you that the Pledge has never been more relevant than it is right now. As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, these words aren’t just a tradition, they are a roadmap. They are a standing invitation to participate in the greatest experiment in human history.
The Shift from Rote to Relevant
For decades, we’ve treated the Pledge like a background noise. You stand up, you place your hand over your heart, and you recite the words while your mind drifts to your coffee or your morning emails. We’ve allowed assumptions to replace actual knowledge.
In 2026, that has to change.
Our mission at Pledge Allegiance is to replace those hollow habits with deep, informed understanding. When you say the word "Republic," do you actually know what that implies for your local government? When you utter "indivisible," do you see it as a permanent state or a goal we have to work for every single day?

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about leadership lately. If you’ve followed my recent letters, you know I’ve asked: Is real civic leadership dead?
I write to you every day to prove that it isn’t. But real leadership doesn’t always start at a podium in Washington D.C. It starts in your living room, in your local school board meetings, and in the way you talk to your neighbors.
The Pledge of Allegiance is a commitment to a set of ideals, liberty and justice for all. Leadership is the act of closing the gap between those ideals and our daily reality. When I show up at the office every morning, I’m not just running a non-profit; I’m coaching a community of patriots who want to lead their families and towns with clarity.
You see, the Pledge isn't a finished product. It’s a promise. And promises require leaders who are willing to keep them.
Honor the Stories, Not Just the Symbols
One of the most immersive parts of our work involves our veterans. We don't just view veterans as a demographic to be thanked; we view them as the living library of American civic responsibility.
Every time a veteran shares their story through our initiatives, the words of the Pledge take on a new weight. When you hear a service member talk about what "liberty" cost them, the phrase "with liberty and justice for all" stops being a line in a poem and starts being a lived experience.
We are dedicated to preserving these stories because they provide the historical context that classrooms often miss. We believe that by combining education with a genuine tribute to those who served, we create a space for informed participation rather than divisive debate.
Civics is a Muscle, Exercise It
You wouldn’t expect to run a marathon without training, right? Well, you can't expect a democracy to function without an educated citizenry.
Civic education is the "exercise" that keeps our republic healthy. In 2026, we are seeing a massive trend toward inquiry-based learning. People aren't satisfied with being told what to think anymore, they want to know why it matters.
Our classroom programs aren't about indoctrination; they’re about exploration. We encourage students to wrestle with the tensions in our history. How do we balance "One Nation" with a beautifully diverse population? How do we ensure "Justice for All" in a system that is still evolving?
